Loving you is Red

If anyone got that Taylor Swift reference, you're awesome (#swiftiesunite). If you didn't, that's cool - just know that love is red and red is love, and that's why this post is in existence.

I don't understand why people seem to equate wearing red lipstick with Christmas, when in my opinion red is a great colour for EVERY SEASON. Screw categorising lipstick shades. You know what I'm talking about. Come spring, it's all about the "pretty in pink" shades, then in autumn it's about the plums and berries. Summer? Layer on the gloss with some bronzer for au naturel chic.

Fact: if you're wearing the perfect ravishing red, you feel like you can conquer the world. I don't see why this bow-down-I'm-awesome feeling should be limited to the winter months.

With this in mind, I've picked my three favourite reds, splitting them into save, spend & splurge, because I'm super innovative like that (lol),

(L-R) Maybelline, Smashbox, Burberry

Maybelline is a matte finish, Smashbox is a gloss/lacquer, and Burberry is a satin stain.

SAVE: Maybelline Super Stay 14 Hour Lipstick - Non-Stop Red, £8.99

They say: super-rich colour, super staying power, weightless formula.

I say: applying this lipstick is not particularly dreamy. You kind of have to drag it across the lips, which is why I'd recommend patting on some lip balm and using lip brush for a more pleasant application experience. HOWEVER, the colour pay-off is fantastic, and it really doesn't budge or bleed. This is perfect if you want to put on a lipstick and not worry that it looks like you've been viciously snogged after a sweaty commute/elevensies. If you're a bit paranoid about flat-matte syndrome (the struggle is real), layer a gloss on top.

SPEND: Smashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer* - Firecracker, £19.00

They say: high-lacquered colour, major comfort, long-wearing, conditioning.

I say: Wowza, this colour is poppin'. This is a true nowhere-to-hide kinda red, and I love it. Keep the rest of your look simple, with lashings of mascara, for optimum impact. It is comfortable, but I wouldn't say it's long-wearing - although once the gloss wears off, you do get a decent, subtle, stain. If you want things to stay in place, I'd invest in Lipcote to be on the safe side, and do that finger-in-your-mouth-then-bring-it-out thing to make sure it doesn't transfer onto your teeth. All in all, it's a smashing (couldn't resist) shade, and I feel like a Hollywood starlet in it.

SPLURGE: Burberry Kisses Lipstick* - Poppy Red, £25.00

They say: weightless, buildable colour, satin finish with continuous hydration.

I say: Oh baby. First, the packaging - it's lush; so much so that my Mum almost wouldn't give the lipstick back to me because she was so excited by the magnetic lid. And the bullet itself is dreamy, with the trademark Burberry checks etched on. It's almost too pretty to use and wear down. Each layer of colour is described as a "kiss", hence the namesake. And yes, the colour applies smoothly, is very buildable and hydrating. Top marks, Burberry. However, I think they missed the "stay, don't stray" memo - LIPCOTE IS ESSENTIAL. Otherwise you look like you been aggressively ravished at work, which isn't very professional. A poppy-hued red for those who prefer to build intensity.

  1. I completely agree with you - wearing red lipstick makes me feel like I know what I'm doing (as does berry lipstick) and I wear them whenever I fancy it. I like all of these shades but I think the Burberry one is probably my favourite! xx
